Beth Grosshans's profile

Teaching Personal Safety to Preschoolers

A retired child psychologist, Dr. Beth Grosshans previously maintained a private practice in New Jersey. She also authored the well-received book Beyond Time Out. The book deals with Imbalanced Family Power (IFP), which has led to children having a wide range of behavioral issues. Community involved, Beth Grosshans supports a number of nonprofits including Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood is a health care provider offering millions of people around the world with information, sex education, and reproductive health care. Among Planned Parenthood's online services is providing advice to parents on how to teach personal safety to their preschool children, including dealing with sexual predators. Parents should keep in mind that the abuser is usually someone that the child knows. So the child must be taught what behavior is appropriate or inappropriate for older children, teenagers, and adults in relation to them.

Take care of whom to trust in spending time alone with your child. Know where your child is and who he or she is with at all times. Ask for a reference, and run background checks on persons you hire to care for your child. Last, listen to your children carefully, as they rarely invent stories about abuse. If your child tells you that your niece, nephew, or partner is abusing them or making them feel uncomfortable, listen to and believe your child in order to stop the abuse and help them heal.
